Sermon Series: Exodus

The Hebrews knew the Old Testament book of Exodus as the "history of salvation."  In many ways, it is the first portrayal of the gospel.  It is THE story of redemption in the Bible whereby God saves his people from the slavery with a promise to bring them into a place of rest.  The story of Exodus is much more than a story of national identity.  Exodus 5.2-3  2 But Pharaoh said,  “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israelgo? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”  Pharaoh, leader of a Kingdom steeped in idolatry and worship of all sorts of Gods, asks the question about the “new God on the block” out of ignorance, but more so, out of arrogance.  It is a challenge to the so called ‘God of the Hebrews’—a challenge that God appears to have taken seriously.  1Samuel 2.27  27 And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus the Lord has said,  ‘Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh?  In other words, the Exodus story is His answer.  As the story unfolds, God reveals exactly WHO HE IS through his absence and his presence, his silence and speech, his action and inaction, his wrath and mercy, through his judgment and his grace.
