John wrote to confront the lies of false teachers who were once again challenging the truth concerning Jesus’ divinity and incarnation. As a faithful under-shepherd of Jesus, John writes to
defend his flock from the wolves who have come in to kill and destroy. He does this not with force or persuasive argument, but by appealing to the truth about Jesus through eyewitness testimony. He intends to strengthen the faith of the doubtful, and assure vulnerable sheep of their security through faith in the God-incarnate, Jesus.
These letters are short but powerful. John writes his letters primarily to inform someone of how they can know that they are a Christian (one with Jesus as their Savior AND Lord). Without doubt, his plain language will lead us all to painfully test the genuineness of our own faith. As he draws some hard contrasts between true and false faith, he proves that someone will not become a Christian without experiencing radical transformation in how they think theologically, how they act morally, and how they relate socially.
