A VISION FOR A MANLY MEN'S BIBLE

At Damascus Road, we believe that all men are pastors and resident theologians of their own homes.  They already have their own congregation they are responsible to lead, protect, and feed.  As such, we believe in challenging men to be men, to live up to their God-ordained rolebe a man to be the head of the family.  Being the head of the family means infinitely more than being the "boss".  Essentially, it means that men take responsibility for their family.  When the world looks at a man's family, they seem him, as representative of it all.  We desire to see husbands whom their wives want to follow because they submitted themselves to Jesus and love them "as Christ loved the church."

In an effort to help us live out our responsibililties as men, we will schedule bi-monthly MEN'S BIBLE STUDIES.  They will take place on Tuesday evenings from about 7-9pm.  Now, I know what you're thinking.  You probably look forward to a men's bible studies like you look forward to root canal work.  Let me assure you of a few things that we are committed to in our studies:

1.  GOD'S WORD:  First and foremost, we are committed to God's Word.  We are not interested in sitting around rehashing our "father wounds" or focusing our energies on analyzing all of our old baggage.  We study the Bible.  If we use a book to supplement our study of God's Word, then we select one that is rich in Scripture and points us back to Jesus.  We desire to learn what it means to be a godly, biblical man according to God's definition, not culture's.  When all is said and done, we believe the most important thing we can teach men is centered on God's Word and not men's wisdom.

2.  MANLINESS:  Simply stated, we are a group of men, not women.  In other words, men and women gather, learn, and fellowship differently.  We will intentionally avoid stereotypes where Christian men are viewed only as a bunch of guys who sit around in sweatervests, drinking Odwalla, and playing Boggle.  We also want to avoid extremes where manliness becomes defined as climbing mountains, chanting around fires, or painting our faces and screaming at the woods.  We desire to be men like Jesus, a man who could call you out when He needed to but willfully sacrifice because He chose to.

3.  FOOD & DRINK:  Fellowship over a meal is a lost art.  We value partaking of God's creation and believe that our eating and drinking can in fact glorify God.  Having food on your plate or a mug in your hand has a way of removing barriers that hinder men from fellowshipping.  Whether the food is healthy or fattening, or the drink is coffee or beer, we desire to follow Christ's example as we discuss truth.  Jesus set us an example by living within a culture where eating together was meaningful in itself.  We believe that Jesus was the kind of man that ate and drank with His friends as He taught them God's truth.
