damascus men
Men are important to God. Don't get too fired up ladies. I did not say that women are any less valuable or equal in God's eyes. Since this is the men's ministry page, however, I am going to talk to them.
God has called men to lead. Unfortunately, many men in leadership have made real mess of things because they forget that God has also called them to submit first and follow. Any man not submitted to the Lordship of Jesus Christ has pretty much made himself the center of universe--one of chaos and confusion. At Damascus Road, we believe in calling men to lead. We believe in taking responsibility for ourselves, our marriages, and our children. We believe every man is a pastor or future pastor of his family first. He has a calling and a responsibility before God.
Unfortunately, men are usually the first ones to complain about church because it just doesn't feel "manly". They shudder at the thought of a Christian man who almost whispers when he talks, smiles even if someone punches him in the face, and has a closet full of pastel sweaters. On the other extreme, many Christian authors today have gone to great lengths to show how that's not true. Now, true manhood looks like climbing rocks, jumping off high stuff, hunting small woodland creatures, and going native around a campfires while you symbolically chant all your pain away.
While we're not opposed to such things (except maybe the chanting), we are more interested in finding out exactly what God calls us to be as men. We believe we find our perfect example of a husband, father, and man in Jesus--the real Jesus. We're not talking about the ever-so-popular buddy Jesus, or the boyfriend Jesus, or the hippy Jesus with feathered hair and some weird halo around his head. We want the hard-working, truth telling, call you on the carpet, blue collar, calloused hand carpenter, tattoed thigh, have a beer with the fellas, come and kick some toy if he has to, king of kings and Lord of Lords Jesus.
At Damascus Road Church, we believe men must take the lead. We will challenge you to step and and step out; to take responsibility for your family first and for your church. It's not that we don't want to see our women using their gifts in our church. But women are usually having to burden more than they are supposed to, filling the holes while lazy men sit on their hiney's and let the church become feminine. There is nothing wrong with feminine--unless you're a man.
