Sermon Series: Redemption - Saving the world from "church"
Redemption is the biblical concept of getting, winning, or buying back from enslavement, in this case sin. It means to free from the captivity by the payment of a ransom, in this case, the blood of Jesus. Galatians 5.1 teaches us it was For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. It is through Christ's sacrifice that we are able to live a life freed from any condemnation or fear. Unfortunately, like the Jewish teachers in Jesus' day, the church loves law. It feels safe and good to be able to meet a "righteous" standard apart from Jesus. To that end, Christians so easily fall into a legalistic mindset that results in either pride or despair as we meet or fail to meet our self-imposed laws. Invariably, this mentality leads to further separation between our "spiritual" lives and our "secular" lives that God did not intend. It creates Sunday morning Christians and Monday morning hypocrites.
The redemption series is an attempt to address those issues that consistently cause Christians trouble as they attempt to live in culture. The series will seek to repair the damage caused by legalism as well as reform our understandings of what it means to be a gospel-centered Christian living in the world. Although the series will feel "practical", at the core of all of these things is a deep rooted understanding of how we live out the gospel in our "real" life.
