Men are important to God. God has called men to lead. Unfortunately, the silence and failed leadership of men has real mess of things. Through abuse, abandonment, or avoiding responisbility all together, men have destroyed many relationships. Any man not submitted to the Lordship of Jesus Christ has pretty much made himself the center of universe and, as a result, chaos and confusion has ensured. At Damascus Road, we believe in calling men to lead with strength and courage. We believe in taking responsibility for ourselves, our marriages, and our children. We believe every man is a pastor or future pastor of his family first. This is a man's first calling and we believe God equips those he calls.
We also believe that the church is necessary for the spiritual maturity of men. Unfortunately, men are usually the first ones to complain about church because it just doesn't feel "manly". The last thing we want to do is create an uber-manly church in response. True manhood isn't exemplified in Ned Flanders or Braveheart. We believe we find our perfect example of a husband, father, and man in Jesus--the real Jesus. We're not talking about the ever-so-popular buddy Jesus, or the boyfriend Jesus, or the hippy Jesus with feathered hair and some weird halo around his head. We want the hard-working, truth telling but gentle, call you on the carpet but meek, blue collar, calloused hand carpenter, tattoed thigh, relax with the friends, willingly endure pain, choose sacrfice, king of kings and Lord of Lords Jesus.
Damascus Road Church has set aside TUESDAYS NIGHTS, from 7-8:30p as a night to equip men to be men. WE realize that men are a different places in their faith journey, so we want to provide different paths to walk. On all the paths, you will be challenged to step up and and step out; to fight against sin and fight for truth. Below is an explanation of the breakdown:
All Tuesdays will begin with large group fellowship, worship, and announcements. Then, unless it is a once-a-month FIGHT NIGHT, men will break out into their various studies throughout the church. Below is an explanation:
Fight Night is a once-a-month gathering for ALL MEN at the church and beyond. The purpose of FIGHT NIGHT is primarily to build relational connections between men in our church. For regular participants in our community, Fight Night is the next step in getting involved in a Road Group or Fight Club. This evening is also a landing place, a point of connection for men new to our church. The content for each Fight Night is specific to the night, meaning, there are not long extended studies over time. This allows for the greatest level of accessibility to men.
Boot Camp is a discipleship class for “new and renewed” followers of Jesus. This is a “Discipleship 101” study through the gospel of Mark using, The Walk by Stephen Smallman. The “class” is designed to equip a new believer with the basics of discipleship, how to study the bible, prayer, a deeper understanding of the gospel, and an introduction to doctrine. A limited number of spots are made available (each round) and a high level of commitment required as you are working to develop habits for of a life of godliness training. On Tuesday ,these groups would break on the first Tuesday of the month allowing them to rest or attend Fight Night if they so desire.(***There will also be a 6AM morning BOOT CAMP available***)
The Gym is for those disciples with a gospel foundation and an understanding of basic spiritual disciplines taught in BOOT CAMP. Different classes would be offered based on discerned needs and available teachers. Led by a team of teachers, classes may include such things as Gospel-Centered Life (9wks), Theology 101, God and Politics, Books of the Bible, etc. The Gym is intended as "continued training" following a boot camp. It is to help further establish men in the Word of God and equip him for every good work. The groups would break on the first Tuesday of the month allowing them to rest or attend Fight Night if they so desire.
BILD classes are for those who want something more rigorous and academic. Classes are designed for individuals currently serving in leadership roles or those demonstrating a desire (and capacity) to teach, lead, or otherwise shepherd. Unlike our other studies, these classes require a greater level of commitment, self-discipline, and participation. Taught in cooperation with other 3strand churches, the curriculum would consist of the BILD material beginning with their Leadership Series 1: Acts; Pauline; Understanding the Essentials of Sound Doctrine. The groups will break on the first Tuesday of the month allowing them to rest or attend Fight Night if they so desire.
Fight Clubs are groups of 3-4 men who meet together for the purpose of gospel-centered discipleship. The hope is that all men at Damascus Road Church commit to participating in a Fight Club consistently. We have a men's leadership team in place to help with administration of and assimilation into Fight Clubs. We want all men in FIGHT CLUB meeting regularly to fight together and for one another.
Join us on the first Tuesday of every month for FIGHT NIGHT. For more information, contact men@damascusroadchurch.org
